As a result,\u00a0people always need to learn new skills, follow new\u00a0procedures, and master new information.<\/p>\n<p>Except that&#8217;s not really true. What people need is to achieve new\u00a0results, or different results, following such change. However, it&#8217;s not always necessary to learn in\u00a0order to produce the desired results.<\/p>\n<p>A job aid is external information someone uses on the job that reduces\u00a0the need to memorize while enabling that person to produce the desired\u00a0results.\u00a0For\u00a0many<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>tasks, especially if they have\u00a0many steps, or\u00a0complicated\u00a0steps, or\u00a0if it&#8217;s\u00a0especially\u00a0important to do them correctly, job aids can\u00a0lower or even eliminate the need to &#8220;learn&#8221; information.\u00a0Checklists at a hospital operating room or on aeroplanes are a form of job aid;\u00a0in critical situations people should not\u00a0rely solely<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>on their memory. Instead, the checklist is a faithful, patient reminder.\u00a0In a crisis, a\u00a0job aid\u00a0helps you proceed<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>step by step to the desired result.<\/p>\n<p>Job aids even make staff training better. Instead of spending time on\u00a0memorizing information that doesn&#8217;t need to be memorized, staff can\u00a0learn in training how to do their work using the job aid \u2013 and apply\u00a0that same guide, back on the job.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>This week&#8217;s guest writer, Dave Ferguson, has created job aids for organizations like GE, Kraft Foods, and the corporation that administers public-sector pensions for the province of British Columbia.
