Specifically, I want to explore which practices are justified and which ones are unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I am disturbed by\u00a0the legal convention\u00a0which first uses a full, legal name, followed by <em>hereinafter<\/em> and a shorter name. In ordinary writing, this sort of long-to-short replacement happens all the time without the officious legalism.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example from some data protection guidelines with not one but two &#8220;hereinafters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>These guidelines provide practical guidance and interpretative assistance from the Article 29\u00a0Working Party<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(hereinafter &#8220;Working Party&#8221;) on the new obligation of transparency concerning the processing of personal data under the General Data Protection Regulation (hereinafter \u201dData Protection Regulation\u201d).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>Since the text that follows\u00a0refers\u00a0only to this<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Working Party, the phrase &#8216;<em>Article 29<\/em>&#8216;\u00a0is omitted.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Likewise, &#8220;<em>Genera<\/em>l&#8221; is dropped from later mentions of the\u00a0<em>Data Protection Regulation<\/em>. Ritually adding\u00a0<em>hereinafter<\/em>\u00a0to the first mention of each term provides no real clarification, since the meaning would be obvious anyway.
