The panel was part of launching a program about science communication studies.<\/p>\n<p>Research manager\u00a0<em>Sanna Kivim\u00e4ki<\/em>\u00a0opened<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the event by comparing<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>science communication with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.certifiedtranslationservices.co.uk\/translatorial-action.php\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.certifiedtranslationservices.co.uk\/translatorial-action.php&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1548519348576000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGprzKelCZfcwMOC5aE9RrcZcUAhw\">translatorial action<\/a>. Science communication is intralingual translation, where the communicator&#8217;s task is to connect the world of the researcher to the\u00a0world of the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>reader.<\/p>\n<p>Professor\u00a0<em>Johanna Vaattovaara<\/em>\u00a0emphasized that science communication is not about popularizing text but about explaining<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>phenomena. New research needs to be communicated in layman\u2019s language because comprehension is needed in political decision-making. Information entombed in formal research reports rarely reaches experts in other scientific fields, let alone decision-makers and ordinary citizens.<\/p>\n<p>In the panel, which included\u00a0<em>Satu Lipponen, Heidi Jaun, and Natasha Vilokkinen<\/em>, we discussed\u00a0our triumphs and our setbacks\u00a0in\u00a0the work of\u00a0popularization. Our common view was that popularization requires several rounds of\u00a0processing. The final work benefits from collegial feedback and from discussions of texts and meanings. One discussion arena is Twitter, which forces you to use plain and concise language regardless of subject.<\/p>\n<p>In recent days, columns in the\u00a0Helsingin Sanomat newspaper have dealt with the\u00a0use of social media by researchers.\u00a0Professor\u00a0<em>Pekka Isotalus<\/em>\u00a0added his support, saying that social media\u00a0today\u00a0is an essential part of the scientific researcher&#8217;s job.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, I attended a panel at the University of Tampere.
