Plain language is clear English for everyone, whereas easy-to-read language is for groups with special reading and writing difficulties. Such groups may be elderly people, immigrants, or people with various physical conditions.<\/p>\n<p>In everyday speech,<em>\u00a0plain language<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>easy-to-read language<\/em>\u00a0are often used as synonyms. The translation of these terms also causes problems. In Finnish,\u00a0<em>plain language<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0<em>selke\u00e4 kieli<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>easy-to-read<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0<em>selkokieli<\/em>, in Swedish the terms are\u00a0<em>klarspr\u00e5k<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>l\u00e4ttl\u00e4st spr\u00e5k<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Both formats, plain and easy-to-read, advise you to write in a concrete way (<em>Matti fixes the dishwasher<\/em>) and avoid abstract expressions (<em>Kitchen equipment is repaired by maintenance personnel<\/em>). Common short words and light sentences are hallmarks of easy language.<\/p>\n<p>It has been estimated that about 10 percent of readers need easy-to-read language; 100 percent\u00a0benefit from plain language.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 13th of October was International Plain Language Day.
