As a satisfied, active Internet user, I would like some clarifications; even in an opinion column, you should\u00a0go easy on the\u00a0exaggeration. Here are eight quotations from the column and eight questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quote 1: &#8220;The Net destroys social debate.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question: What exactly does &#8220;Net&#8221; mean here? The technical platform? Online newspapers? Databases? Search engines? Facebook? Twitter? Wikipedia?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quote 2: &#8220;Social media is a handy tool if you need advice, or things, or want to show off your travel photos.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question: Is the term &#8220;social media&#8221; used here as a synonym for Facebook?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quote 3: &#8220;<\/strong><strong>The EU is maintaining\u00a0digital boundaries&#8230;\u00a0I received many different tips\u00a0about bypassing these barriers. Thanks,<\/strong><strong>\u00a0but I was trying to spark a conversation about something else. &#8220;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question: If your conversational opening flops, is it a failure of your friends or of the channel?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quote 4: &#8220;Last week\u00a0<em>Riikka Moilanen<\/em>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/strong>d<strong>estroyed online<\/strong><strong>,\u00a0because she used the expression\u00a0<em>human carbage<\/em>.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question: Who\u00a0 &#8220;destroyed&#8221; her? Everyone on the Internet?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quote 5: &#8220;Netizens ranted for a full day, until Moilanen got fired from her post.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question: What does the stodgy term &#8220;Netizens&#8221; mean? According to Statistics Finland, 88% of the country&#8217;s population uses the Internet.\u00a0Did all those people work on getting Moilanen fired<strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Quote<\/strong><strong>\u00a06: &#8220;The victory of the True Finn party, or Trump, or Brexit would not happen without the Net.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question: Were election results all socially favorable before the Internet? No unpleasant victories?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quote 7: &#8220;Go to get-togethers and talk about politics in bars.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question: Is there a specific bar we should use for worthwhile social debate?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quote 8: &#8220;I use the Net a lot.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question: Is this column therefore only the prattle of a Netizen?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of September,\u00a0Jukka Relander\u00a0claimed in his column that the Internet was destroying social\u00a0debate.
