Along with examining the larger principles, I find myself deep<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in addictive details.<\/p>\n<p>I particularly\u00a0like<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the term\u00a0<em>legal pronoun<\/em>, which gave a new name to a familiar issue.\u00a0<em>Legal pronoun<\/em>\u00a0refers to expressions like\u00a0<em>abovementioned\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>aforesaid<\/em>, which could easily be omitted. According to\u00a0<em>Mattila<\/em>&#8216;s search, the Finlex data base can retrieve heaps of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>legal pronouns \u2013 for example, the abovementioned\u00a0<em>abovementioned\u00a0<\/em>is mentioned 1180 times. Legal pronouns are even more common in English.<\/p>\n<p><em>Periodic sentences<\/em>, on the other hand, include every detail of the topic in the same long sentence. Decisions from a court will summarize facts, exceptions, conditions and conclusions in a single sentence in hopes of avoiding misunderstandings. A two-page decision can consist of as few as two intricate sentences. In the past, these endless<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>sentences were a measure of a judge\u2019s professional skill, but today the periodic style is fortunately history.<\/p>\n<p>The meaning of many words opened up in a new way for me thanks to\u00a0Mattila\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yksityinenkielitoimisto.fi\/en\/the-word-of-the-week-is-legal-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comparative Legal Linguistics<\/a>.\u00a0For example,\u00a0<em>emancipation<\/em>\u00a0was originally\u00a0a\u00a0Roman legal term which meant &#8220;the act by which one who was unfree or under the power and control of another, is set at liberty and made his own master\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Legal linguistics has not been\u00a0a transient interest for me.
