This thorough work reveals the close relationship between contemporary legal texts and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Roman law. During the Middle Ages, lawyers in Europe<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>used only Latin, which was also the language of law and adminstration.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its practical duties, legal language also aims to uphold the authority of the law. For this reason, legal documents stick to formal<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and even<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>archaic expressions. At the turn of the millennium, Finnish-language legal texts contained more than 600 Latin phrases, such as\u00a0<em>ex ante\u00a0<\/em>(from before),\u00a0<em>in casu<\/em>\u00a0(in the case),\u00a0<em>expressis verbis<\/em>\u00a0(expressly). In English these are even more common; every year the U.S. Supreme Court receives hundreds of petitions for a writ of\u00a0<em>certiorari\u00a0<\/em>(to be informed).<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers will often use\u00a0foreign words and abbreviations\u00a0<em>bona fide<\/em>\u00a0(in good faith), both out of practicality and out of habit.
