Spokesmen from two ministries described the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>hundred-word health and social services vocabulary, and\u00a0also reminded participants about the use of plain language.\u00a0<em>Emmi Hyv\u00f6nen<\/em>, Communications Manager of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, politely responded\u00a0that the material\u00a0from\u00a0the ministries was useful, but\u00a0needed<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to be popularized. She<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>emphasized a key point beyond the usual rubrics:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>organizations must test their texts on\u00a0users;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>otherwise, there is no guarantee of comprehensibility. Another essential point\u00a0came from\u00a0plain language expert\u00a0<em>Ari Sainio<\/em>: the content must be arranged from the perspective of\u00a0the reader, not\u00a0that of the\u00a0organization.\u00a0Finally, groups set to work trying to simplify some health and social service documents, tossing aside peculiar terms like <em>unincorporated county enterprises<\/em>.<em>\u00a0<\/em>All in all,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the workshop\u2019s motto\u00a0could have been<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;Write like a human, not like a bureaucrat&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Plain Language Day, October 13th, the Institute for the Languages of Finland organized a workshop with the theme of health, social services, and regional government reform.
