Last week, senior specialist\u00a0Ulla Tiilil\u00e4<\/em>\u00a0brought\u00a0<\/strong>up an interesting case: her organization\u2019s web copy, along with her own article,\u00a0<\/strong>was plagiarized in a column that appeared in\u00a0<\/strong>Talousel\u00e4m\u00e4 magazine. When\u00a0Tiilil\u00e4 reported about this,\u00a0she documented her case with highlighted images showing several identical or nearly identical passages<\/a>.<\/p>\n The opening of the Talousel\u00e4m\u00e4 column is copied directly\u00a0from the website. In the next section, the column deals with a Vaasa University research which\u00a0Tiilil\u00e4\u00a0discussed\u00a0<\/strong>in her own article.\u00a0And in the final section the columnist used\u00a0<\/strong>Tiilil\u00e4\u2019s\u00a0original\u00a0example with a few\u00a0numbers\u00a0updated. All in all, the column essentially repeated Tiilil\u00e4\u2019s work. There was no acknowledgement of her as the author until after she’d contacted the magazine.<\/p>\n This is not the first time that\u00a0<\/strong>an expert\u2019s work was misappropriated. The “borrower” builds a story, but the material is all someone else’s.\u00a0With luck, that expert will find his name\u00a0attached to a brief quote. More often, the original author is left\u00a0out entirely, as happened to Tiilil\u00e4.
