I want writers to change obscure terms to everyday words<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>and to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>shorten long phrases in order to increase readability. But do these things really improve understanding? Many external factors such as the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>reader&#8217;s previous knowledge have<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>an impact on comprehension.\u00a0<em>Britt-Louise Gunnarsson<\/em>\u00a0found when examining legal language that basic editing changes<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>didn\u2019t make the legal<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>text\u00a0much<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>easier to understand.\u00a0To read is to work through different levels \u2013 first characters, then words, and then sentences \u2013 in order to interpret the text as a whole.\u00a0At<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the final stage of\u00a0comprehension, the reader will\u00a0realize\u00a0the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>action\u00a0that the text is leading him to.\u00a0In her research,\u00a0Gunnarsson found<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>that changes in the lower levels of the text did not improve comprehension.\u00a0Changes need to focus on higher concerns \u2013 for example, the perspective from which the content is approached. The usual<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>readability factors affect superficial understanding, while the perspective enables deeper understanding. What this meant for legal texts<strong>, <\/strong>according to Gunnarsson,\u00a0is<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>that comprehension<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>improved when issues were examined from a citizen&#8217;s viewpoint, not from the court&#8217;s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I insist on understandable text.
